When it comes to building a Mount Rushmore of notable Wilmington hallmarks, what would you place on the list? Maybe it’s One Tree Hill, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Dawson’s Creek, or one of the many other films shot in town. Perhaps the Riverwalk, The Battleship NC, The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, or another notable attraction cracks the list.

But in recent years, I’d make the argument the Wilmington coffee industry as a whole deserves a spot on the coveted fictional “Mount Rushmore of Wilmington”.

With over 100 local shops, Wilmington has punched well above its weight in terms of coffee production and consumption. So as a coffee shop, how do you stand out in a field of so many?

For Amy Heggen, owner of Blue Cup Roastery, the answer is simple - find your lane, and stick to it.

Hailing from Iowa, Amy Heggen moved to Wilmington with her husband to escape the harsh midwestern winters. Once arriving in the Port City, she jumped on board with Bespoke Outpost, which was occupying the space that Blue Cup Roastery currently calls home in the labyrinth of shipping containers that is The Cargo District.

For Amy Heggen, getting into the coffee industry was based more on a love for logistics and organization, rather than just strictly caffeination. In her managerial role, she was able to flex her operational excellence in managing the day-to-day operations of the shop. And when the opportunity came to acquire the business along with a roaster, she jumped on the opportunity.

Amy rebranded the shop to Blue Cup Roastery in January 2022. The shop continued to hold its strategic location that allows for both walk-up-window and drive-thru access.

Blue Cup Roastery is not only just Wilmington’s only container coffee shop, it is one of Wilmington’s only local coffee shops with a drive thru.

The idea behind Blue Cup is high quality coffee in a working environment. We want to be approachable, with a simple menu, all while being really good at what we do with great customer service.

Diligence, purpose, and simplicity are words that come up when Amy describes the strategy behind Blue Cup. Finding what works for them, sticking to the basics, and getting the little things right are points making up the driving compass for the shop’s identity today.

When you try to do it all, you spread your resources too thin and you can’t really see what is actually working.

Amy describes the growth as intentionally “slow and steady”. And in a crowded marketplace of many coffee shops, rather than try to be everything to everyone, Blue Cup has solidified itself as the go-to for no frills, high quality coffee that locals in the area love.

Amy doesn’t view the other shops in the area as “competitors”. However, she feels the many coffee shops in the area push and inspire each other to level up and provide the best product and experience possible.

You can choose to look at it as “competition”, or you can choose to look at it as positive peer pressure.

Amy has embraced the broader Wilmington coffee community as well outside of Blue Cup Roastery, through organizing the annual Wilmington Coffee Fest. This will be the third year Amy has managed the massive gathering that attracts vendors from all across the southeast. “Growing up in the midwest, I had three choices of coffee and that was it. To have this variety of options in Wilmington is such a gift,” says Amy.

The event includes business-forward networking for coffee shop owners, a latte art throwdown for baristas, and a street fair for coffee fanatics over the two days. This year’s event will be held September 18-19.

It is a great event where you get to meet and sample so many shops you normally wouldn’t have the chance to interact with.

As Blue Cup Roastery rounds out its fourth year, Amy looks to continue to dial in her current processes and improvements while the possibility of expansion is still on the horizon.

If Blue Cup were to be a kid, she’s still a toddler. Once we get her strong and independent, we’ll look into another location.
